브와포레에서 펴낸 이혜원 작가님의 첫 그림책 『나는 발차기 중』을 디자인했습니다. 장난기 가득한 그림과 엉뚱한 상상력으로 진중한 메시지를 전하는 이 그림책은 자신만의 속도로 천천히, 포기하지 않고 나아가는 모든 이들을 발랄하게 응원합니다. 그리고 타인과 자신을 비교하며 조급해 하는 이들에게는 따스운 위안과 격려의 메시지를 전합니다. 이야기 속 주인공의 엉뚱함과 자유로움을 디자인으로도 전하고자 주요 파라텍스트 아래에 흰색 또는 단색의 다각형을 그려 넣었습니다. 또한 주인공의 수영복 색깔에 착안해 표지를 펼쳤을 때 표지와 책등을 가로지르는 마젠타 색의 평행사변형으로 발랄함과 엉뚱함, 용기와 자유로움을 표현했습니다.

I designed I Am Kicking, the debut picture book by author Hyewon Lee, published by BoisForêt. With playful illustrations and delightfully offbeat imagination, this picture book delivers a thoughtful message—cheerfully rooting for everyone who keeps moving forward at their own pace, slowly and without giving up. For those who grow impatient by comparing themselves to others, it offers a warm message of comfort and encouragement. To carry the protagonist’s quirkiness and sense of freedom into the design, I placed white or solid-colored polygons beneath the main paratext. Drawing inspiration from the color of the protagonist’s swimsuit, I also used a magenta parallelogram that stretches across the front cover and spine when the book is opened, expressing playfulness and whimsy, courage and freedom.
