길 위에서 살아가는 고양이 ‘작은이’와 ‘노랑이’의 이야기를 중심으로 가족의 사랑, 이별, 성장 그리고 애틋한 그리움을 이야기하는 책 『스쳐간 풍경들은 마음속 그림으로』를 디자인했습니다. 서정적인 글과 그림에 스며든 고양이들의 이야기는 사람들이 살아가는 모습과 닮아 있습니다. 길 위에서 고단한 삶을 살아가는 고양이들에 대한 따뜻한 시선을 통해 우리 자신들의 이야기 또한 돌아볼 수 있는 책이 아닐까 싶습니다. 길고 시적인 제목을 효과적으로 전달할 방법을 고민하며 표지를 디자인했습니다. 책의 제목이 곧 이야기의 핵심을 관통하고 있었기 때문입니다. 표지를 위한 그림을 제안하거나 내지의 그림 가운데 한 컷을 고르기 보다, 내지 속 장면들을 표지에 흩뿌리는 방식을 택했습니다. 앞, 뒤 표지와 책등을 스쳐가듯 연출한 타이포그래피 또한 제목을 상기시키기 위한 의도입니다. 그림책으로는 다소 낯설 수 있는 표지를 과감히 승인해 주신 브와포레와 최정인 작가님께 감사드립니다.

I designed Passing Landscapes Become Pictures in the Heart, a book that tells a story of family’s love, parting, growth, and tender longing through the lives of two cats, “Jageuni” and “Norang-yi” who live on the streets. The cats’ stories, woven into lyrical words and illustrations, mirror the way people live their own lives. Through a warm, compassionate gaze toward cats enduring the hardships of life on the road, this book invites us to look back at our own stories as well. As I worked on the cover, I thought deeply about how to carry across the book’s long, poetic title—because the title itself runs straight through the heart of the story. Rather than proposing a single illustration for the cover, or choosing just one scene from inside the book, I chose to scatter moments from the interior pages across the cover instead. The typography that drifts across the front, back, and spine is also meant to echo the act of “passing by”, calling the title gently to mind. My sincere thanks to BoisForêt and author Choi Jung-in for boldly approving a cover that might feel unfamiliar for a picture book.
