이 책은 세계적인 디자인 회사 ‘펜타그램’(Pentagram)의 전신인 디자인 스튜디오 Fletcher/Forbes/Gill의 설립자 가운데 밥 길(Bob Gill) 선생님께서 다른 두 설립자 앨런 플레처(Alan Fletcher)와 콜린 포브스(Colin Forbes) 선생님에게 보내는 응원의 헌사와도 같습니다.

책을 작업하며 알게된 사실 중 하나는 2021년 밥 길 선생님의 부고 이후, 6개월 뒤인 작년 5월 콜린 포브스 선생님께서 작고하셨다는 사실입니다. 친구 분을 여의고 난 뒤 따라 떠나신 것 같아 책을 작업하며 마음이 울컥하고 촉촉해지기도 했습니다. 이 책의 주인공이나 다름 없는 세 분이 모두 세상을 떠나신 바로 직후, 멀리 이곳 한국에 출간되는 것이, 한편으로는 한 분이라도 살아계셨으면 정말 좋았겠다 싶었습니다. 하지만 이 자체로 너무나 의미있는 일이 아닐까 싶습니다.

밥 길 선생님께서 반세기 전부터 소중한 두 친구에게, 그리고 다음 세대인 어린이들에게 전하고 싶었던 이야기를, 세상을 떠나신 뒤에도 새롭게 이어질 수 있도록 하는 일을 맡게 되어 그래픽 디자이너로서 정말 기쁩니다. 신나게, 또한 진중하게 작업했습니다.

특유의 위트와 따뜻한 시선으로 책을 옮기신 민구홍 선생님과 함께 작업하게 된 계기가 제게는 민구홍 선생님의 말씀을 빌려 ‘필연으로 규정하고픈 우연’이었듯이, 이 책을 만나 세상을 자신만의 시선으로 새롭게 바라볼 어린이들, 어른들, 수많은 창작가들에게도 이 책을 만난 일이 필연으로 규정하고픈 우연이 되기를 소망합니다.

This book feels like a tribute of encouragement from Bob Gill—one of the founders of the design studio Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, the predecessor of the world-renowned design firm Pentagram—to his two fellow founders, Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes.

One thing I learned while working on the book is that, in May of last year, six months after Bob Gill’s passing in 2021, Colin Forbes also left this world. It felt as though he followed after his friend, and as I worked on the book, my heart often swelled and grew quietly moist. Just after all three men—who are, in many ways, the true protagonists of this book—had passed on, the book was published here, far away in Korea. Part of me wished, deeply, that even one of them were still alive to see it. And yet, perhaps this, too, is something profoundly meaningful.

As a graphic designer, I am truly grateful to have been entrusted with carrying forward the stories that Bob Gill had wanted to share, for over half a century, with his two dear friends and with the next generation of children—even after he himself had gone. I worked with both joy and earnestness.

Just as my own chance to work with Min Guhong—who translated this book with his distinctive wit and warm gaze—felt, in his words, like “a coincidence I wish to name as fate”. I hope that for the children, adults, and countless creators who will meet this book and come to see the world anew through their own eyes, encountering this book, too, will become a coincidence they wish to name as fate.
